With rapid urbanization, India’s green cover is depleting at an alarming rate, impacting air quality, biodiversity, and overall public health. There is a growing need to establish “lung spaces” that not only enhance the environment but also serve as long-term, sustainable economic assets. In view of this, Rotary Bangalore Midtown has launched an initiative called NATURE FOR NATURE with support from CRPF, Yelahanka.
Sandalwood (Santalum album), known for its high commercial value and environmental benefits, is a viable option for this dual-purpose initiative. However, due to its high value, sandalwood is susceptible to theft and vandalism. Hence, it is essential to grow these trees within a secure and monitored environment.
The CRPF campus, with its well-guarded, spacious, and controlled ecosystem, presents an ideal environment for the safe growth of high-value species like sandalwood. Integrating this initiative within the CRPF campus not only ensures secure and uninterrupted growth but also adds aesthetic, environmental, and symbolic value to the land.
To establish a secure, ecologically diverse plantation with sandalwood, creating a long-term green buffer and improving air quality.
To generate significant economic value from sandalwood harvest after 15–18 years, earmarked for:
To create a replicable and sustainable model combining green growth with social equity, to sensitize CRPF personnel and their families about long-term ecological stewardship and wealth creation from green initiatives, to create a safe and secure ecosystem for the growth of sandal wood trees for a cause
Tree Plantation: 6,000+ sandalwood saplings planted within a multi-species ecosystem (including fruit trees, and native flora for biodiversity balance).
Soil and Eco system Preparation: Entire plantation area enriched with organic compost and irrigation systems.
Maintenance Support: MoU signed with CRPF highlighting the cause and an understanding with the execution partners for 2 year maintenance, pruning, pest control, and health monitoring.
Total Trees Planted in phase 1: 3000 (including 3,000 sandalwood + 500 support species) with 3000 more planned for phase 2
Campus Area Utilized 14 Acres (CRPF Campus, Yelahanka)
Community Participants Involved 300+ (CRPF families, cadets, rapid action force)
This unique initiative merges environmental regeneration with social responsibility. By selecting the CRPF campus, a symbol of national security, we ensure the safe nurturing of high-value sandalwood while planning for a meaningful financial outcome that supports India’s heroes and vulnerable citizens during times of need. This is not just a plantation project; it’s an investment in a greener, more compassionate future.
