Groceries Distribution for Pregnant and Lactating Mothers

A Monthly Ongoing Initiative by Rotary Bangalore Midtown In Collaboration with Swabhimaan Trust

Rotary Bangalore Midtown, in partnership with Swabhimaan Trust, continues to implement a meaningful and sustainable nutrition program for pregnant and lactating mothers in the underprivileged community of Rajendranagara Slum, Bangalore. This monthly initiative focuses on ensuring that women during pregnancy and early motherhood receive essential nutrition at an affordable cost, thereby promoting better maternal and infant health outcomes.

The project was launched in response to the persistent issue of malnutrition among women in low-income settlements, where access to nutritious food is often limited. Poor maternal nutrition can lead to complications during pregnancy, low-birth-weight infants, and long-term developmental challenges. Recognizing this gap, Rotary Bangalore Midtown introduced a model that not only provides nutritious groceries but also promotes community-led economic empowerment.

Each month, identified beneficiaries receive a nutritious grocery kit consisting of items such as pulses, ragi, and ghee—distributed at 50% of the market cost. The remaining cost is subsidized through a collective purchasing model, where bulk procurement directly from super stockists significantly reduces expenses. This innovative approach minimizes reliance on donor funding while teaching women the power of pooled consumer demand and smart purchasing.

This ongoing project has been widely appreciated by the community. Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude not only for the nutritional support but also for the practical knowledge gained about leveraging collective buying for economic benefit. The initiative has strengthened community bonds, encouraged self-reliance, and created a replicable model of sustainable service. Rotary Bangalore Midtown’s continued commitment ensures that mothers and newborns in underserved areas receive the nutrition and support they need for a healthier future.
